Learn About Heat Pump Operation

A heat pump is an all-in-one solution that can heat and cool your home. The system operates all year round and can alternate between heating and cooling effortlessly. When you change the settings on your thermostat, your heat pump has a reversing valve that changes the refrigerant to move in one direction or the other based on your needs.

Refrigerant can move in one direction through the lines to absorb heat from inside your home and transfer it outside. When the reversing valve engages and refrigerant begins to move in the opposite direction, it absorbs heat from outside your home and transfers it inside as a method of increasing the temperature.

Climate Considerations

Heat pumps are excellent for our climate zone where we have milder winters. A standard heat pump may not be able to stand up to the heating needs of our neighbors further to the north, but it’s perfect for southern California where the winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing.

In our mild winter climate, a standard heat pump does an excellent job of transferring heat inside and keeping your home warm enough during the winter season. The biggest thing you want to consider are the two efficiency ratings assigned to a heat pump. The first is a SEER2 rating that helps estimate a heat pump’s energy efficiency for cooling. You also want to consider the HSPF2 rating that estimates a heat pump’s efficiency for heating.

Investing in a high-efficiency unit is beneficial because you can save money on your monthly energy costs while also reducing wear and tear on your unit itself. When your heat pump is more energy efficient, it doesn’t have to work as hard to produce results, ultimately helping the unit to enjoy a longer lifespan.

Unique Heat Pump Benefits

You may be wondering what exactly sets a heat pump apart from other HVAC options. When it comes to cooling, a heat pump is very similar to a standard central air conditioner in how it operates. The real difference comes from how a heat pump operates for heating. Instead of creating heat the way an electric or gas furnace would it, a heat pump is instead transferring heat from one place to another. This method of heating is much more energy efficient.

Plus, it’s safer. Although modern furnaces have a lot of safety features, there are some inherent risks with having a heating element or igniter active inside of a furnace. With a heat pump, there are fewer risks since the system doesn’t rely on a combustion system.
