5 Signs You Need an AC Upgrade

Has your air conditioner been struggling lately? Even if there aren’t obvious signs, sometimes you just have a gut feeling that your air conditioner is experiencing problems and usually that gut feeling is right, so don’t ignore it. But there are also some times that your unit exhibits very obvious signs that your air conditioner needs to be repaired or replaced.

If you have been searching for “air conditioning installation near me,” you’re in the right place. You can always give our team a call when you have doubts–even just a gut feeling–and we can offer an in-home assessment. Keep reading to learn more about the signs that your air conditioner is struggling and may need to be upgraded to a newer model.

Unusual Sounds

One of the easiest ways to identify AC problems is to listen for unusual sounds. You may hear something loud like a knocking or screeching. Other times, unusual AC sounds can be a humming that is louder than usual or a gentle rattling. Whether you hear an unusual sound once or persistently, it’s definitely a good idea to get your air conditioner checked out. Sometimes sounds can indicate small problems that are easy to fix. But other times, sounds indicate very large and expensive problems that can mean it’s time to replace your air conditioner completely

Lack of Cooling

There are times when we can make repairs to your air conditioner and get it working again if it stops cooling. For example, if you have a refrigerant line leak we may be able to repair the line and recharge your refrigerant so that your air conditioner will begin cooling again. But other times, a lack of cooling can mean that your compressor motor went out and you’re facing a repair that will cost you thousands of dollars. In that case, it usually makes more sense to invest in a complete AC replacement instead of replacing that individual part alone.

Poor Airflow

Airflow problems can come from a variety of sources. If your air filter is too dirty, it will block airflow going into your air conditioner. That’s usually an easy fix, and you can swap out your old air filter for a new one to see improvements to airflow. But other times, airflow problems are more extensive. Your air conditioner will reach the point that it is so old that repairs will no longer help anymore

Indoor Air Quality

You may notice that your indoor air quality seems poor all of a sudden. When dust and dirt build up inside your air conditioner, they will recirculate again and again throughout your home. If surfaces around your home are significantly dustier than usual, that’s a sign that you have poor indoor air quality. A new air conditioner will provide better air filtering and improve your indoor air quality compared to your current, older air conditioner.

Energy Bills

If your energy bills are creeping up or you experienced a sudden spike on your energy bills, that is a sign that your air conditioner is working less and less efficiently. The more energy that it has to use to cool your home, the more expensive your monthly energy bill will be. Newer air conditioners are even more efficient because technology has advanced so much in recent years. Even though a new AC is a big investment, you can save hundreds of dollars each year on your monthly energy bills.
